Hawaii Sign Permitting

What is the sign permitting process in Hawaii?

The permitting process in the State of Hawaii is where applicants start the development, review and approval of a sign. Our permitting process offers services required to obtain permits for Building, Zoning and Engineering that pertain to signage or attached structures on the Big Island, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, and Oahu. JASC’s permit specialists coordinate and review signage permit applications and issue permits when approved by all responsible agencies.

JASC has the license that is required to not only obtain a permit, but to install signage in the State of Hawaii. A general contractor license is not an allowable license to install signage, and failure to have a licensed sign company to install signage can lead to penalties and fines.

How long does it take to obtain the permits?

The average permit takes approx. 20 business days, however the county is obligated to respond within 30 days if any issues present themselves, at which time the sign permit can be corrected and resubmitted.

What can you do for me to ease the process of acquiring permits in Hawaii?

All signs in Hawaii are in public view (excluding private roads and resorts) require a permit, however there are options such as temporary signs that are allowed without permitting.
